Does Breastfeeding Really Burn Calories?
How many calories do you burn breastfeeding then? There is a common belief that breastfeeding will burn 500-800 calories a day and as you can read here from WebMD:
Breastfeeding burns extra calories, so it can help you lose pregnancy weight faster. It releases the hormone oxytocin, which helps your uterus return to its pre-pregnancy size and may reduce uterine bleeding after birth.
This is the reason you might burn extra calories compared to a woman who doesn’t breastfeed. The reason I’m using “might” is that there is no real scientific proof that you really will burn those extra calories when breastfeeding compared using a bottle. When that is said, I’m of the belief that the fact from WebMD will make you lose extra calories.
The reason for this is that you need to produce milk and producing the 25 ounces every day, it will cost you 650 extra calories besides your normal requirement and this is how many calories does breastfeeding use. You will have to eat 500 calories extra to meet that energy need and the last 150 calories will come from your fat stores that.
